The privilege to be able to walk through this ancient site, and to be able to actually clamber around, to touch history, the past, is awesome.

Across the street from Bayon, is the beautifully renovated Baphuon. Originally built to worship the Hindu god, Shiva.

Though the temple has gone back and forth between being a sacred place dedicated to Buddhism or to Hinduism, it has been concluded and generally accepted that the towers represent the face of Lokesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion.

Built as a Hindu sanctuary dedicated to Shiva, the name Baksei Chamkrong translates to “the bird that shelters under its wings.”

The flight from Bangkok to Cambodia was exactly one hour. Super easy and well worth the money. We had thought about catching the bus or train, because it sounded like a great adventure. But in the end, we opted to save time.
